Darling daughter's 9th birthday complete with an upside down #6. With all the children I have, it is perplexing as to why I do not have a '9'.
It was an impromptu party due to a short summer vacation from school, our trip to Kauai, summer camps and trips to and from the airport for travelers coming and going. So I decided that the best way to have a party was to e-mail her bestest friends, and decide on the food and cake without her input. I presented it to her as a surprise birthday party ~ she was so curious.
We enjoyed spinach dip, POG, kailua pork sandwiches on poi rolls and birthday cake. All the party goers were also curious about the cake and they all made their guess. Chocolate and strawberry had the most votes. After we had sung 'Happy Birthday' and blew out the sparkle candles the cut was made and a rainbow cake delighted everyone. 'No rain, no rainbows' it is said on Kauai, so a rainbow cake it was.
I found several rainbow cakes on pinterest and combined several recipes into one ( Whisk Kid & Cook Like a Champion blogs). I am not a huge fan of frosting, I am more of a cake person, in my book it is bad luck not to eat birthday cake. It is frosted with a buttercream frosting and I would have had more in between the layers but I was running short. My friend Mary and I had fun frosting this tall tower of cake and in the end laughed our heads off. We tried a technique that is supposed to make the cake look cloud like.. I do not know what happened, probably several factors, but the idea was scrapped and the frosting smoothed. You can find images for 'how to frost a fluffy cloud cake here at Annie's Eats dot com. I would make it again and frost it with an italian buttercream.
The only thing missing from our day of fun and celebration were her brothers and sisters. Maybe for #10 they can all be here.
To many more birthdays and laughs and fun
