One morning we walked out to the ocean and found ourselves down the road. We happened upon a monk seal sunning and resting on the sandy beach. We heard a 'psst'. We looked around and saw an older gentleman motioning us over. He is a volunteer for the monk seal response team on the island. He asked claire to go to a bush a pick flowers. When she returned with the flowers he told us this story:
Once there were two small children who were close, grew up together and played together. And as they got older they grew closer. They grew very close over time, one day the boy asked to marry the girl. The father of the girl was not happy because the boy was a commoner and the girl was royalty. So the father separated the two forever.
When you place the two flowers together they form a heart in the center.
I know I did not do the story justice, he told it so much better. I must practice my story telling.
This is one of the many experiences I love about this island, people and culture. When you go out you never know what or who you might encounter.
