F ~

a month of a to z

F is for ~
fabric
The members of the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild had a very nice Christmas party which included the scrap swap and food. What I didn't know is that one kind individual goes through their stash and makes enough raffle prizes for everyone in the group. I randomly chose a bag and inside were scraps of fabric and all my favorite color.

Whatever your passion I would encourage you to seek out a group of like minded persons to hang out with and share ideas.

'F' is for friends!

Have a lovely day

my stash ~

from the Long Beach International Quilt Festival. I think I showed restraint...maybe...

16 Hawaiian FQ's
Purchased fabric and pattern from Beyond the Reef

Forgot which booth I purchased the Stems pattern from.
To complete the quilt you use a jelly roll. I like pre-cut fabric.
I bought the king size kit from The Quilter's Faire booth. Lovely lady with her 2 sons.

These are Anna Griffin fabrics...gorgeous!
A combination of minkie, chenille and sweet floral fabric make this soft and cuddly.
My poor potholders pale in comparison to all the goodies I purchased. So I will set a goal to complete my potholders and only then will I be able to indulge in a 'just because' project. I will let you know how it goes. My darling husband came into the room and looked around then commented that I have too much fabric. Best get to stitching

65 mph ~

As usual, my transition back to the mainland is slow. I wake up late, drive slow and am generally just taking it easy while trying to catch up to the rest of the mainlanders. It is so easy to slow down~ I find myself driving 55-60 and feeling that it is too fast. The posted speed on the island of Kauai is 35-55, with 35 being the typical speed. You see and enjoy the scenery and can stop at lei stand or shave ice cart with ease.
Here are the last of the pictures from our trip ~ we made dinner that included macadamia nut crusted Opah, our favorite fish in the world, steak perfectly done, taro rolls, sushi rice that was not perfectly cooked and fresh mango salsa with all the ingredients purchased from local stores and growers.

happy faces ~ Hale Hina
throwing lei's ~ Kepuhi Beach
I toss my lei's into the ocean because I had heard, whether true or not, that if you do so you will return. I am evidence that it works because if given a choice this is where I will return over and over again. I am always sad to leave and I am sorry that these pictures do not capture all the amazing colors of the sand (crushed sea shells), black lava rock and blue water which happens to have a full range of blues and purple. I know it sounds unreal.
sad faces ~ Lihue Airport

pretty payphone ~
I didn't take a picture of the painted trash cans around the island but even the payphones are pretty. We were surround by beauty, culture and aloha the entire time.
fabric ~ Kapaia Stitchery
Here is my stash of fabric and patterns. The large stack in the middle will become another Postcards quilt that will fit the bed. The barkcloth, the 3 on the left, will become pot holders and pillows. Almost can't bear to cut into it. The rest is a mystery ~
Hawaiian applique ~ in progress
I am still in the progress of tacking down my first applique, the one on the left ~
I put them side by side then laughed. I thought the little one was a big project~

Better get to it

Linen project bag

Fun easy bags.

I would recommend making them all. I learn so many things from small and large projects that I then can use for other projects, quilts and sewing clothing. Making a bag is also a great way to get used to different types of fabric. I have in the above pictures, linen, linen/cotton blends, quilting cotton, bias and twill tape, nylon & cotton webbing, vinyl, hardware, ribbons & ruffles. A grand assortment.

I am still trying to cut into my Children at Play fabric and I think I will save it for another quilt other than the Ferris Wheel. Only because the pieces for the quilt are small and the design and charm of the fabric might get lost in the cutting and sewing.

Happy Sewing
