Super Secret Hockey Quilt for Christmas ~

This is a fabulous pattern and it looks as though we could just step on in and have a good ole time.

I chose to use the old time Flying Skate 1978-97 colors, red, yellow, black for the fans on one side of the rink while using the current colors blue and green for the fans in the stands on the other. And a little wedge there on the bottom for the Zamboni machine. The top was quick and easy. I cut, ironed and stitched while re-watching the first two seasons of Downton Abbey. Have to be ready for Season 4!

Paper pieced Vancouver Canuck logo surrounded by soft flannel for the back of the quilt. This is the first time I used spray adhesive and I ran into a few troubles which is why this was completed after Christmas. I had to take out the free-motion quilting on one end of the rink. Good thing my husband went to bed. I was up watching The Sound of Music with my little one while taking out stitch after stitch. There was dark blue thread everywhere. I still don't know why things went all caddywhompas. I thought starting this quilt back in October would give me enough time to have this completed by Christmas.

Marathon paper piecing today. I think it came out great! I am certainly not a 'pro', all the credit goes to Sonja of Artisania blog. Such a great pattern. Check out her little gnome's...so cute.

 I might just have to try some of her other patterns. I have someone who loves foxes in my house!

I have to think about new projects for days before I venture out. Paper piecing is very new to me. I waited for a brave, quiet moment to try it out. Our house roots for the Vancouver Canucks, long story, so what better project to make for the super secret Christmas present that the logo of our favorite team. I was going to attempt to make my own pattern then while looking around the web I found Artisania and she had the tutorial and template for free. I love that! Thank you Thank you.

Now I have to decide whether to add the logo to the front of the quilt( OCD ) or pieced into the back.

In our home, we love hockey and follow the Vancouver Canucks...yes I know, who knew?

I found this recipe for dessert bars that originates in British Columbia some time ago. The ingredients include, graham crackers, coconut, cocoa, chocolate, butter, sugar and custard powder. I finally found custard powder. Our team needs some love so what better way than for us to don our t-shirts, hats and enjoy these tasty, rich morsels than the night we may be out for the run for the cup. sad face....

We have backups and there is still plenty of play-off hockey.

Happy Green Day!

I was busy this weekend working both inside and outside. It was warm and sunny with periods of what is called 'May Grey'. I think the overcast, greyness must have something to do with the deserts warming up. 

After a year or more I have purchased the paint for the silhouette project found in Alicia Paulson's book Stitched in Time. I used Delta Ceramics acrylic paint mixed with textile medium,(purchased at Beverley's) following the directions on on back. The freezer paper is ironed on to the fabric with attention to all the inside curves and hair details. I let it dry a little before removing the freezer paper stencil. It dries fast. The next step is to heat set the paint to the fabric. I used a large sheet of parchment paper to protect both my ironing board and the silhouette's. The directions say to let dry for 7 days....wow.... waiting! I love when a project looks the way you imagine. The silhouette's of the big girls are on 8 x10 pieces of fabric and the little one's measures 6 1/2 x 8. Can't wait to finish these up and hang them on the wall of my room.

The garden grows inches each day and the smallest member of the family noticed baby tomatoes. We have 6 tomato plants, that's bunches of tomatoes, gallons of sauce. I am going to have to get creative. There is rosemary, thyme, green onion, cilantro and 2 basil plants. DD #2 painted rocks labeling the plants but the water is removing all her hard work. Next time, sealant......

Besides working and family things my plan for this week is to purchase felt for the silhouettes, mix up bread starter, the girls would probably like muffins, stitching the strips of the Modern Workshop quilt etc....I have more time on my hands now that our beloved Canucks are out of the playoffs. I enjoy watching them play and will have to wait till the fall.

2010 Quilts- Catching up

This was originally written on 10/14/10 and the 3 quilts I made for that Christmas season gave me confidence in trying more complicated quilt patterns. This is also the point where I was sewing and watching the Olympics. DD #2 and I had a great time watching Canada vs USA for the gold medal. This is the short story of our current passion for the sport and the Vancouver Canucks. So as we watched hockey I would cut out  fabric,  pin squares together or iron seams. You can get a lot done in regulation time!

So I think that I will make a jelly roll/strip quilt for my youngest daughter. The pattern comes out of Pam Lintott's book Jelly Roll and my daughter selected Pandora's Box. She says because of the show 'Big Brother'  and in the last season the Head of Household was given the opportunity to open 'Pandora's Box and all did. This is a great project because it is based on '4 Patch' which I have never done and it is going amazingly fast. I purchased pre-cut strips of fabric from Cozy Quilt shop. They remind me of old fashion flowery fabrics and very girly. I was inspired by a picture in Alicia Paulson's book, Stitched in Time , on page 14 and made a matching square pillowcase. Although my daughter selected it, I am trying to hide the fact that I am making it, so I am trying to use a little sewing table that houses my old singer machine which is in the corner of my bedroom. The kids are so used to me on the dining room table that perhaps they won't notice what I am doing in my bedroom. If this works I will probably do all of my Christmas sewing here. (I did finish 3 quilts in this little corner of my bedroom that year)

For this month I will finish my t-shirt quilt, Pandora's Box quilt and complete the JumpRope Dress. Next month is a mystery. (Sadly I did not complete the t-shirt quilt or the Jump Rope Dress....there is always this year)
